Okinawan diet, studied in 1949 comparing the Okinawan diet to the rest of Japan. The Okinawans ate significantly less rice and wheat, and got 69% of total energy intake from sweet potatoes. This was directly after WWII, and it has been called into question how much this reflects a typical Okinawan diet.
